Welcome to Destiny 2 and Low Sodium Destiny! I’m sure by now you’re pretty overwhelmed by everything that’s in the game but don’t worry, this guide is here to let you know what you can do as of right now - both for free and expansion wise. So let’s get started! Where to Begin So you just finished creating your character and you’re ready to enter the game! The first thing you’ll be greeted with is a cutscene of how humanity found the Traveler, and another of your Ghost finding you. The game will now show you the ropes by going past the wall in the Cosmodrome and getting your first weapon. From there, you’ll meet your new best friend: Shaw Han, the vendor for the Cosmodrome. He’ll guide you through the New Light campaign and you’ll be faced with your very first boss. Don’t worry! This one won’t be too hard to beat.

If you’re a returning player reading this, there is an option to skip the New Light campaign, but be aware that this is irreversible. So if you’re a brand new player, it’s very helpful and worth it to play through the campaign.

Your First Exotic Weapon

Congratulations! You've finished everything in the New Light campaign! With the super conductor in hand, you can now head back to the Tower and speak with the Titan Vanguard, Commander Zavala. He will give you the Spark of Hope quest, which will lead to getting your first exotic weapon (which happens to be one of the best in the game). Once you get this quest, make sure you head over to the Quests tab and press the appropriate button/key to Track it. This will enable some helpful information when you pull out your Ghost on any destination. There are several pages for quests and bounties, but it can be easier than opening the Director and moving to the Quest screen every time.

Later on in this exotic quest, you’ll encounter a platforming area known as a jumping section in the Cosmodrome. Jumping and traversal areas are common throughout Destiny 2, but don’t fret. There are many Guardians in the Low Sodium Destiny server who are willing to help you get through it and teach you some tricks no matter which Class you play or which jump you’re using.

What To Do Now? You’ve made it through the jumps, defeated all the enemies, and equipped your shiny new exotic weapon.

Now what?

The game gives you lots of options for what to do from here… maybe too many choices for some people. But that’s ok. We’ll give you some tips for streamlining your experience and your fun.

One popular option is to work on your Guardian Rank until you reach Rank 5. Once you hit Rank 5 you have easy access to the game along with getting more subclass fragments and aspects from Ikora Rey, the Warlock Vanguard in the Tower. This will also help you get mods and loadout access in your character screen, so you can experiment with another great aspect of Destiny 2: buildcrafting! There are channels on the Low Sodium Destiny Discord server that allow you to ask for help with any exotics you may have gotten along the way or any builds you are trying to make. Ask lots of questions and be open to the suggestions of your fellow Guardians, and you’ll be well on your way to building a powerful god-killing, space magic-wielding badass of your own!

Another way to continue your mission is to speak with Ikora, who has a selection of 3 quests that players can pick up; Into the Abyss (Void subclass), Exalting the Flame (Solar subclass), and Taming the Storm (Arc subclass). These quests are meant to introduce you to the subclass as well as reward you with an exotic armour piece that’s meant to make that subclass even stronger. You can also pick up a New Light kits from her. Beware though: while she offers one for each of the three Light subclasses, you can only choose one of those. These kits include 2 legendary weapons, 1 exotic weapon, 4 rare armour pieces, 1 legendary class item, and a basic subclass build.

Free-to-Play Content

There are a lot of free things to do in Destiny 2 without spending any money on the game. Vanguard Ops, Gambit, and Crucible playlists (collectively known as “Ritual Activities”) will drop items for you after you complete an activity, and will help you gain access to some good weapons and new armor from each vendor (Zavala, Drifter, and Shaxx, respectively). There’s also the Legends tab that gives you access to 3 free raids (Vault of Glass, King’s Fall, and Crota’s End), 1 free dungeon (Prophecy) (note: Ghosts of the Deep is listed in the Legends tab, however it requires the Lightfall dungeon key purchase in order to play), and 2 free exotic missions (The Whisper and Zero Hour). None of these activities have matchmaking, but there are always Guardians in the Low Sodium Destiny server willing to lend a hand. You can even schedule events in advance for when you know you’ll have enough free time to complete one.

  • Raids are 6-player, high level activities. They are capstones on some of the story beats in Destiny 2 and require lots of communication to complete. Raid length varies, but can usually go for a few hours, so make sure you have enough time to dedicate before jumping into one.

  • Dungeons are 3-player activities that were introduced as a kind of mini-raid experience. They still require lots of communication and teamwork, but are not as long as raids. They are also designed to be run solo, though that is a big challenge even for the most dedicated Guardians.

  • Exotic missions are 1-3-player activities that may have a timer involved, so you’ll need to move fast to make it to the end in time. If you can handle everything that’s thrown at you, you’ll earn a powerful exotic weapon that’s only available in that mission.

You also have access to two campaigns that are permanently free-to-play: Shadowkeep and Beyond Light. Both of these campaigns provide excellent background for where the game’s story currently is, and introduce you to some of the major characters and information that will give you a better understanding of the current expansion, The Final Shape. Through Beyond Light’s campaign, you’ll gain access to the first Darkness subclass, Stasis. If you're looking for their respective missions, Beyond Light can be found on Europa in the middle of it's map and Shadowkeep will be directly next to "The Moon" text.

Have Fun!

That’s a quick overview of how to get started in Destiny 2! If you need help with anything mentioned above, please feel free to reach out on the correct channel in the Low Sodium Destiny Discord server. We’re more than happy to help!

  • LFG (short for Looking for Group) is where you’ll be able to find other Guardians to play with, whether it’s working on campaigns, slaying gods in a raid, or just having some fun in Crucible or Gambit.

  • Guides and Help is the place to go with any questions about what to do next. Feel free to post a screenshot of your quest screen and someone will guide you to your next destination.

  • Builds and Meta Discussion is where you can ask about different buildcrafting strategies once you’ve gotten the hang of weapons and subclasses in the game. Here you can find tips on how to make your Guardian even better at taking down the enemies of humanity.

You should add that the quests for Shadowkeep and Beyond Light can be picked up from the Tower at the Quest Archive to the left of the Postmaster. These quests are not automatically given out, and there is not quest marker on The Moon or Europa until you acquire the quests form the Quest Archive.

You are correct that there isn't a quest marker for the respective campaigns until you get the quest, however the starting missions can be selected from their respective destinations. Beyond Light's starting mission in the middle of the map, Shadowkeeps in the bottom right to "The Moon" text.
